Virgo New Moon Newsletter🌳
Happy Virgo New Moon, witches!
At the time of my writing, it’s a chilly September morning and it already feels like fall. The final weeks of summer are upon us, Lunasa has definitively come and gone, and the fall equinox is imminent on September 22nd with the sun’s entrance into balance-loving Libra. Today’s New Moon feels like a definitive fresh start, a new beginning and within a few weeks time, a new season will be upon us.
As September is such a pivotal month for many of us, I invite you to take a moment (and a few deep breathes!), enjoy a warming beverage and cozy up to read the astrology for the New Moon Cycle (and there is a lot happening throughout September, including Eclipse Season.) Enjoy, and take care! ☕
Monday, September 2nd. Happy New Moon in Virgo! Supported by Mercury’s third trine to Chiron since July, this New Moon introduces a fresh mindset, clarifies a perspective flip, or delivers closure about something left unanswered from the retrograde (think back to what was occurring around August 23rd and July 18th — it’s possible that themes from those dates re-emerge for resolution.) If you’re wanting to circle back on concepts, agreements or dialogue left ambiguous from the retrograde, time it to today’s New Moon if possible — even if the convo doesn’t go the way you hope, we can discuss our position with more eloquence and self-awareness during this transit (and the other party is even likely to reach out first, or concepts organically re-emerge, solidify or develop themselves more fully.) Uranus just stationed retrograde yesterday*, coinciding with Pluto’s return to Capricorn from now until November 19th, so outer planetary energies are supercharging the vibe of the week, leading to an increasingly disruptive sense of collective unrest, anxiety, and fanaticism (which may seep into your microcosm in the form of edgy irritability, heightened survival mechanisms or a looming sense of existential angst.) While these energies are influencing the culture of the moment, today’s Virgo New Moon is a grounding influence amidst this backdrop of intense and chaotic astrology, supporting bodywork, nutrition, and any first steps taken toward enhanced health and wellness. Curating a new workout regimen, diet plan, skincare routine or meditation practice (or any efforts taken to re-orient and simplify) are well-suited to today’s astro. New Moons in Earth Signs are fortifying and stabilizing, ideal for re-structuring, self-nourishment and pulling things back into order, but the New Moon in Virgo is especially powerful for intentionally forming habits which organize our lives and improve our daily efficiency (even small steps taken toward enhanced productivity and wellness this New Moon can yield big results.) Your guiding mantra? Say no to itchy fabrics, drama-filled relationships and anything with an offensively artificial fragrance – say yes to simplicity, health hacks, power-cleaning and anything that keeps you organized.
*In the last Newsletter, I totally forgot to mention Uranus stationing retrograde on September 1st until January 30th (I was so distracted by Pluto re-entering Capricorn!) Uranus Retrograde is not in and of itself a major event (every outer planet spends half the year retrograde), but the three-ish days surrounding Uranus turning retrograde are important to note, as they bring plot-twists, turning points, a strong need for freedom and space and tech glitches, often which have a freaky or coincidental vibe.
Tuesday, September 3rd. Mars and Neptune square, an influence which started developing over the weekend and remains potent throughout mid-week. When Mars and Neptune square, everyone is craving a transcendental high – the planet of mysticism obscures Mars’ goal-oriented nature, which can leave us feeling disconnected from our mission and vaguely uninspired by ego drives or worldly motivators. It’s helpful for aligning our individual goals with the well-being of the collective, so it’s productive if you can link your personal mission to a larger (and ideally, more selfless) motivation, but the 48 hours around this transit aren’t auspicious for acting out recklessly or impulsively (and we can reliably anticipate that other people will be.) Because everyone is seeking self-elevation (through glamor, intimacy, drugs, art, etc.) it can be difficult to discern a genuinely worthwhile venture from a cheap, fast or synthetic high. If a gesture or move feels fundamentally out of character, just wait (and during this transit, we’re more likely to experience results from something already in the works – specifically, it’s rad for creative and spiritual breakthroughs or turning points within intimacy.) The risk with this transit is taking something over-the-top – a professional move, a relationship, or an unwise financial or emotional gamble – and leaving oneself ill-prepared or unfavorably positioned. Interestingly, this transit occurs at the same time as Venus’s conjunction to the South Node, an annual transit notorious for introducing relationships which feel startingly and often enticingly familiar (but are not necessarily in our best interest to pursue.) Pay attention to who emerges today – and more importantly, what feelings, memories or realizations they elicit. Another possibility? Something – dialogue, a chance run-in, a random thought – brings insight into a past romance, or the formative circumstances behind a current one.
Wednesday, September 4th. Mars enters Cancer today for exactly two months. When The Warrior God changes signs, it’s a cosmic cue to re-consider our tactic/approach and adjust to the new vibe. In Cancer, Mars strengthens our gut instincts – from now until November 3rd, it’s especially important (and productive) to follow our hunches, which further us along in professional/mundane matters as well as relationships, style and creativity. Archaic astrology considers Mars in “detriment” in the watery realm of the Crab, but the Warrior God’s protective nature is actually enhanced in this instinctive sign. This transit supports any attempts to score or deepen security (but there can be a risk of premature self-protection or – because we’re more aware of our vulnerabilities during this transit – a tendency to withdraw or behave passive-aggressively.) The major blessings of this transit are heightened instincts and an accentuated ability to recognize our people (i.e., those who feel like family.) Mars in Cancer also turns biz witch -- this transit is excellent for commerce, scoring wealth, anticipating trends and deepening relationships.
Saturday, September 7th. Mercury squares Uranus for the third time, and now that the Messenger God has stationed direct, we’ll experience the benefits of something seeded around July 22nd (when this aspect formed for the first time.) If something seemingly disruptive occurred around August 18th -- an opinion changed in a way that didn’t favor you, an agreement was inconveniently reversed or an appliance spontaneously glitched -- the situation re-emerges for resolution if it’s going to (and probably with cool benefits you didn’t anticipate.) Otherwise, this transit brings personal growth, meaningful insight, unexpected (but probably favorable) news or developments or a breakthrough realization. Whether it’s subtle or obvious, the catalyst to today’s zippy burst of innovation is whatever chaotic thing emerged in your microcosm this retrograde (it’s probably related to the themes of your Taurus and Leo houses, respectively – and it’s even more intense if you’ve got planets hovering around 27 degrees of either sign.)
Sunday, September 8th. The Sun Opposes Saturn, a once-yearly cosmic bummer which introduces Saturnine dilemmas and malaise – i.e. unpleasant dealings with bureaucracy or authority figures, circumstances or people movingly slowly when we’d much prefer haste, or an oppressively enhanced awareness of debt, adversity and insecurity (or limited space, resources or time.) Though this transit is an objective doozy, it’s not without slow-burn benefits: Whatever occurs now, it supports our maturation and moves us in the direction of taking greater accountability. We benefit during Saturn transits when we take responsibility for our actions (i.e. paying the parking ticket, making the appointment, or owning up to the ways we’ve contributed to the situation without self-obsessing or guilt-tripping ourselves.) The good news? Mercury Square Uranus is still gorgeously in play, introducing brilliant realizations, offbeat solutions and major breakthroughs in creativity, romance and style. If mundane annoyances seek your attention during this transit, don’t give them more of your vitality than they’re worth – they’ll need to be addressed, but don’t fixate on them in lieu of the moment’s zany ingenuity. Cool developments are occurring with equal intensity (and an unlikely alliance, offbeat solution or unexpected twist could lend major support.)
Monday, September 9th. Mercury re-enters Virgo until September 26th, and it’s worth re-iterating how innately fabulous this two-week period is: Heightened focus, perseverance and eloquence are the main benefits, and because our mental faculties are heightened, we can learn more easily and analyze new data with speed and accuracy. Others admire meticulousness and articulateness during this transit, so don’t shirk on the details or overlook the importance of verbal competence. Honest effort and diligence are not only noticed during this transit – they set you apart from those who eagerly accept shortcuts.
Wednesday, September 11th. Mars and Mercury sextile, a helpful transit which supports innovative, productive dialogue, energizing rapport, heightened charisma, speedy mental processing and rapid results or movement within business and commerce. Everyone benefits from this transit, but it’s especially favorable for earth (Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus) and water signs (Pisces, Scorpio, Cancer.)
Thursday, September 12th. Mercury leaves the shadow zone today, a 48-hour window where remaining mysteries from the retrograde tend to re-emerge to be solved if they’re going to. Anticipate decisive announcements (especially at the political/sociocultural level) and if you’d like to circle back on anything still up-in-the-air from the retrograde, time it to today if possible. Today marks a natural turning point, an ideal opportunity to revitalize a stance or mindset, to circle back on unfinished convos or pending negotiations, or to finalize an announcement or decision or conclude a piece of writing or a train of thought. The sun also squares Jupiter today – coinciding with Mercury leaving the shadow zone, it emphasizes the overtness of any aha! moments but can also compel us to take things to excess (especially mutable signs — Geminis, Virgos, Sagittarians and Pisceans are prone to restlessness now.) Broadly, we’re more inclined to take things over-the-top (including our reactions, impulses, spending, drinking, etc.) but this revealing transit is not without its benefits. Supporting audacity, confidence and enhanced self-expression, the sun square Jupiter encourages any pursuits requiring a little moxie. Helpfully, it’s now more transparent where we stand with others (we’re all more obvious in our self-expression, revealing the subtle interest or affection we harbor toward others as well as any disdain.)
Sunday, September 15th. Venus and the moon trine Jupiter today, a supportive transit excellent for socializing, networking, building rapport, developing connections, creating or receiving beauty and art, generating abundance, flowy inspiration and groundbreaking dialogue or beneficial developments. We all receive a boost of charisma, comfort and ease during this transit, but it’s especially helpful for air signs (Libras, Aquarians and Geminis.) Mars also squares the Nodes today which favors leadership and assertiveness but may confront us with an old grudge, or prompt us to deviate from a path we’ve already paved.
Monday, September 16th. Venus Opposes Chiron, a potential trigger for insecurities and self-doubt regarding our physical appearance, creative self-expression, visual aesthetic or even our worthiness or lovability (this will especially affect Libras, Aries, Capricorns and Cancers.) With an Opposition, the trigger is usually something external to us – a person makes us feel inferior or undesirable, a piece of news threatens to diminish our Venus vibe or even an ill-fitting garment or bad lighting cues a downward spiral of shame about our looks. The best way to engage with this energy? Don’t try to feel sensual, creative or charming today -- it’s genuinely okay and normal if you don’t – but Chiron transits always uncover gifts or talents we only harbor because of hardship, so focus on what you notice today that you’re good at (i.e. helping others feel good in their bodies, giving solid relationship advice, styling people for their body type, etc.)
Tuesday, September 17th. Happy Lunar Eclipse in Pisces, conjunct Saturn and square Jupiter! Lunar Eclipses in water signs are always emotive and illuminating but this one especially so. Jupiter is an amplifier, magnifying any inner dilemmas, paradoxes, complexities or climaxes we’re presented with (and augmenting any associated turbulence or tension as well as the productivity or radness of the results.) At the individual level, big emotions are inevitable this Full Moon, but because it plugs directly into Jupiter’s square to Saturn, it’s accentuating the themes of this larger sociopolitical transit as well. Whatever’s occurring around this Full Moon is likely here to stay through December: Both collectively and at the individual level, we’re dealing with larger themes related to the inherent paradox between Jupiter (space, freedom, growth) and Saturn (boundaries, restrictions, responsibility and maturity.) The Full Moon in Pisces always does this, bringing reality checks if we’ve become too inclined toward magickal thinking or, conversely, delivering magick and ease if we’ve been overly fixated on details or adversity. While it isn’t developed fully until December, this Lunar Eclipse is hinting at how we can create more balance between hubris and nemesis within our microcosm (and amidst the backdrop of a rapidly changing paradigm.) Pay attention to what comes up for you around this Full Moon’s window (i.e., a heightened need for space – and the sudden resources or wiggle room to allow for that – or, conversely, a pressing matter turns your attention to unattended mundane responsibilities.) Unfortunately, the Full Moon’s conjunction to Saturn ensures that any worldly stressors we are navigating around this date are likely to feel especially weighty. There’s a tendency with the Full Moon Conjunct Saturn toward depressiveness and a generally despondent vibe – everyone is feeling a little bit gloomier but that doesn’t mean we should disregard the moment’s emotions as Full Moon malaise. If you find your attention fixated on something that’s innately a bummer, know that you always feel that way – it’s just that you might normally distract yourself, or find it easier to turn your attention elsewhere (this Eclipse, that isn’t possible – Jupiter augments everything, making it impossible to disregard our emotions.) Hopefully you’re not facing off against adversity this Eclipse but if you are, it’s likely to feel especially morose – but the good news is? This Full Moon is potentially productive, encouraging us to address any mundane dilemmas directly (and during a Full Moon conjunct Saturn, we’re rewarded for doing the work – i.e. putting in the hours, calmly addressing the situation and working through it rather than trying to evade the issue or operating around it.) As always, Lunar Eclipses point to a heightened need for emotional presence and self-care. Notice not only what comes up externally to you during this FM but within you; be willing to care for yourself in those moments and be present with whatever emotions arise.
Wednesday, September 18th. Mercury Opposes Saturn today, another vexing influence which can bring depressive thinking and unpleasant dialogue or realizations (along with worry, fear and pessimism.) We can quickly find ourselves regressing into patterns of self-guilting or regret and – especially falling this close to the Lunar Eclipse – emotions are running high (this is especially true for those with a planet hovering around 15 degrees of a mutable sign – Virgo, Pisces, Sag or Gemini.) When Opposite Saturn, Mercury in Virgo’s analytical nature goes rogue – worst case scenario, we become insecure, self-obsessed and crushingly perfectionistic. Should this occur, know that it’s a misuse of the moment’s invitation into productivity and meticulosity (and with Mercury in Virgo, we’re quickly rewarded for diligence, attention- to detail and effort. If we don’t shirk, others notice.) Thankfully, today’s Aries Moon sends us straight into mission mode -- ideally, this is a productive (even if humbling or irksome) transit. The best tactic when the moon is in Aries is to minimize complications or distractions, while Mercury in Virgo bestows mental granularity (especially when opposing the astrological Taskmaster.) For the best results, channel singular focus into the goal or mission at hand, simplifying where possible and welcoming adversity as an opportunity to show off!
Thursday, September 19th. The Sun trines Uranus, a wonderful transit which helps us score rad breakthroughs, innovative insight and offbeat genius (yes, it’s occurring alongside several Saturn transits but despite any irritating factors or discouraging developments, something cool is happening now – we can easily overlook trines which coincide with tense configurations, but there is supportive astrology in play to combat these more challenging influences.) The Sun trine Uranus is especially favorable for the edge walkers of society – i.e. rebels, creatives, artists or outsiders – and for anyone with a planet hovering around 27 degrees of an earth sign (Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus.) It’s developing ingenuity on the brink of fruition since May (or restoring the freshness of something we’ve become jaded about): It could be a relationship, a creative endeavor, a stylistic change or even a career move, but something is ready to develop itself more fully (with the sun and Uranus in earth signs, it could also be about wellness, nutrition, wealth or something tangible – don’t overlook cool health/abundance hacks or body insight which breezes in today!)
Friday, September 20th. The Sun Opposes Neptune today, an annual event which marks the moment where this mystical, ethereal planet is as close to the Earth as it can get. This transit (which we’ll begin to feel on Wednesday and continue to experience through the weekend) supports anything spiritually or creatively inspired: Dream recall, journaling, meditation, yoga, dance, painting, and tending to the soul are well-timed to today’s astro. It can develop intimacy within existing connections, but it’s not a good time for risky financial investments or relationship moves, as cloudy thinking and difficulty discerning real cues from false projections can wreak havoc (and this transit tends to draw out vibe vampires – i.e., people looking to benefit from our excitement about saving them or extending them compassionate when – according to them -- no one else has.) It’s best handled with firm boundaries – i.e., not giving someone a trillionth opportunity to behave differently, or turning your back on a promise you already made to yourself – but it favors intimacy, solitude, creativity, rest, reflection, spirituality and mysticism.
Saturday, September 21st. Mercury squares Jupiter today, amplifying words, thoughts, and the speed with which data circulates. It’s a supportive transit for reciting magickal incantations, mantras or affirmations (or to employ positive thinking to move energy in a worldly scenario), but from the 20th – 22nd, it’s important to be very intentional about what we affirm (by speaking aloud or reciting in our mind), as thoughts and language are influencing our circumstances more rapidly today than usual. This transit can incite gossip (or find us revealing something in private which then comes back on us, whether favorably or not), but more commonly, it compels us to make massive assumptions which are not necessarily accurate, or to misunderstand or inflate the gravity of a statement or conversation (and especially with the Sun Opposite Neptune, wishful thinking inhibits our perception all weekend!) Otherwise, it’s fab for friendly, expansive dialogue (strengthening platonic bonds and helping us notice when they’re forming) and encourages witty banter, stimulating conversations, solution-oriented thinking and skillful wordcraft (it’s highly supportive for professional writers and speakers.)
Sunday, September 22nd. The sun forms a trine to Pluto in the early hours of the morning before entering Libra later tonight, officially marking the Autumnal Equinox. Venus also squares Pluto in the afternoon before entering Scorpio until October 17th (all these planets are at the anaretic degrees of their respective signs, intensifying the impact of these transits.) While squares in astrology are typically regarded as challenging or conflict-oriented, Venus square Pluto comes with innate benefits. To reap them, though, we must be willing to get vulnerable, go deep, and to show up authentically for whatever’s unfolding in our microcosm. Venus square Pluto is a threshold, often coinciding with natural turning points in our romantic and creative lives (especially for those with a planet hovering near 29 degrees of a cardinal sign – Libra, Aries, Cancer or Capricorn.) People tend to fall in or out of love during this transit (and because these planets hover around the last degree of their respective signs, it’s particularly likely to instigate endings, definitive realizations or conclusive moments of finality – leaving a relationship for the last time, for example, or – conversely – trying the dating apps one more time, making the final edits to a passion project, etc.) This transit encourages us to transform whatever feels stagnant and to abandon complacency in favor of passion, leading to truly inspired fashion ensembles, deeper intimacy in our relationships, regenerated passion for our creative endeavors and the general opportunity to rebirth or renew our vibe (within a romance, artistic venture or even cosmetically.) If we are feeling called to have a difficult conversation or end a connection that feels shallow or unsatisfying, it’s probably aligned (and this transit rewards us for showing up and revealing our authentic self, even if it’s uncomfortable or gritty.) This is also a prosperity configuration (especially if it hits a planet in your chart) and the sun trine Pluto is massively supportive – if we are transitioning or rebirthing something in a major way, the vibe is empowering and uplifting. Whether you’re forming or ending a relationship, abandoning or attempting a bold creative venture for the first time, the sun trine Pluto is resurrecting and energizing, calling on us to take back – or step more fully into -- our power. The sun trine Pluto favors challenging feats which test our strength, enhancing our resilience, endurance and physical energy and vitality levels (to make the most of this energy, carry a Pyrite crystal today.) The sun in Libra until the end of October supports alignment and recalibration, while Venus in Scorpio favors intimacy, depth, vintage looks and dramatic cosmetic makeovers.
Tuesday, September 24th. Mercury in Virgo trines Uranus today bringing expansive shifts in perspective, breakthrough dialogue, innovative thinking, cool synchronicities, intuitive flashes of insight, rad realizations, offbeat ingenuity and supportive incoming intel (especially if you have a planet hovering around 27 degrees of an earth sign – Taurus, Capricorn or Virgo.) This transit brings small breakthroughs or invites us down the rabbit hole of an unexpected tangent but if possible, following that bizarre trail of breadcrumbs can introduce favorable developments or plot twists (i.e. a relationship or creative breakthrough, mental clarity or the conception of a new idea.)
Wednesday, September 25th. Mercury in Virgo opposes Neptune in Pisces, bringing hauntingly vague dialogue, strange conversations, mental fog and surreal insight. Mercury is still trine Uranus which lends support today, but Mercury Opposite Neptune is innately disorienting. At worst, this transit can charm us into revealing information we wouldn’t normally (or acting in an overly fond way toward others.) It’s a time where we’re more susceptible to manipulation, and though it’s good for inspiration, spirituality and bonding within established relationships, it’s not ideal for a bold relationship move or to initiate firm commitments. Pay attention to symbols, synchronicities, dreams and conversations which emerge today, but ideally, avoid making long-term decisions or agreements or solidifying new relationships (and don’t try to arrive at concrete conclusions. If possible, this is a time to observe, not act!) Writing down dreams, pulling tarot cards and noticing repeating numbers can bring insight today, and while creative inspiration is strong, don’t be surprised if your ideas are too abstract to channel into anything tangible yet (but with Mercury trine Uranus, it’s good for solitary or group brainstorming.)
Thursday, September 26th. Mercury trines Pluto hours before entering Libra. In a harmonious aspect to the God of Death, the Messenger planet brings revelatory realizations and deep dialogue (and tends to either affirm or disprove our suspicions or intuitive hunches.) But coinciding with Mercury Opposite Neptune, today’s developments could be weirdly vague, inaccurate or wrought with missing data (thankfully, our lie detection ability is strong – we can sense if something doesn’t align with our own observations or intuitive insight, but avoid jumping to definitive conclusions until more is revealed around the 30th.) If we’re paying attention, much is developing and revealing itself this week (especially around the 24 hours of this transit) so notice what people tell or show you about themselves (and if you’ve been waiting to hear from someone regarding a prior conflict or a conversation left ambiguous, they’ll likely circle back for clarification during this transit.) Mercury in Libra until October 13th won’t nullify the moment’s overarchingly turbulent astrology (i.e. Pluto in Cap) but it brings a mental recalibration and supports diplomacy, cooperation, and facilitates harmony within relationships.
Monday, September 30th. Mars trines Saturn shortly after midnight, and later in the afternoon, the sun conjuncts Mercury. Mars trine Saturn is an excellent time to negotiate around worldly matters, and it’s a time where we can expect results or movement in this realm (think taxes, commerce, professional dealings, accounting matters, business partnerships, etc.) If you’re dealing with bureaucracy or tending to a pragmatic obligation, the energy around the situation flows today – if you’re not, it’s still supportive, encouraging resolve, composure, productivity and problem-solving. Mercury conjunct the Sun is always a cool transit, and while these two celestial bodies are never far from one another, it’s worth noting when they form an exact alignment, as it births new insights, perspectives or mindsets. This configuration could aptly be called a “New Mercury” (the New Moon every month is when the sun conjuncts the moon – anytime a personal planet conjuncts the sun, it’s a definitive rebirth or new beginning with regard to those planet’s ruling themes.) This transit brings significant dialogue, chance meetings and illuminating information but if there’s a downside, it’s that we’re all more inclined to identify strongly with our opinions, ideas and perspectives, so the vibe is less open-minded than usual (the flowy Mars/Saturn trine, however, is still supportive for negotiations but don’t try to change someone’s mind – ideally, meet them where they are for the best results.)
Tuesday, October 1st. Today is the Dark Moon in Virgo. Dark Moons are for integration and exorcisms – integrating the events and deeper meanings of the previous Full and New Moons and exorcising old ghosts before the new moon cycle – and in Virgo, this is embodied effectively via nutrition, bodywork and power-cleaning. It’s an excellent time to deeply clean the kitchen or bathroom, to donate old clothes or to sort through any overflowing drawers or collecting piles of unread mail. Not only are we more productive than usual during a Virgo Moon – they bring fulfillment and even spark joy from cleaning and organizing, and make us more effective at it – but doing so is psychically significant today (as you organize a “drawer,” you’re clearing psychic clutter from your psyche – by purging old clothes, you’re exorcising the ghosts of old versions of you.) Make it a spell by lighting a candle (something fresh and earthy) and introducing some intention!
